Hawaiian
fever
A Closer Look
In December, 1862, Mary wrote to her “dear little sister:”
“George still has the Hawaiian fever. He wrote
a year ago, asking an appointment as missionary in his diocese. But
the Bishop
was
delayed and did not leave England until last August. So he has
scarcely more than reached there, as he went by way of San Francisco.
George has a friend of semi-public influence in the Island of Kawai
(Sheriff of the Island) and he is anxious for George’s return
there and will see the Bishop immediately upon his arrival. Should
we ever go there, and you have no more urgent claims, will you
come with us? ”
