The mission of the Community & Economic Development Department is to encourage and support private and public efforts that improve our quality of life. This is accomplished by providing programming and services to existing and prospective individuals, families, organizations, and businesses which enhance and promote safe code compliant construction, orderly growth and development, self-sufficiency, and community pride in the areas of planning, building codes, housing, economic development, redevelopment, and historic preservation.

In addition to these responsibilities and services, the department conducts studies and research, maintains current demographic data, provides administrative and technical support to city boards and commissions, and takes an active role in community organizations, professional organizations, and state and regional advocacy groups. These activities are all done as part of an ongoing effort to enhance the opportunities available to the community.
