[ARCHIVED] Xcel provides update on gas/service replacement project downtown

Find below an Aug. 20 update on the Xcel Energy gas main and service replacement project taking place in the downtown Faribault.

Gas service work in the alleyways will continue the week of 8/23 and the transfer of services will be scheduled.  

Service replacements in the streets are nearing completion.

Find below an Aug. 13 update on the Xcel Energy gas main and service replacement project taking place in the downtown Faribault.

For the week of Aug. 16, Xcel will be boring MN-60 for the installation of the new main through alleyway. Following the bore, the main installation will nearly be complete. Service installation work will continue in the alleyway and out on 2nd Street & 3rd Street.  Continued transferring of services in both locations and will have prior contact with businesses before transferring service over to the new system.

Find below an Aug. 6,, 2021 update on the Xcel Energy gas main and service replacement project taking place in the downtown Faribault.

Work will continue down the alleyway between Hwy. 60 and Central Ave. The new gas main is currently being installed. Once the main installation is complete, transferring services from the existing main to the new one in will start. The Contractor will communicate with businesses to schedule times for service transfers in the upcoming weeks.

Services on 2nd St. NE will also begin next week (8/9/21). There will be closures set up (one-ways and lane shifts) between Hwy. 60 and 2nd Ave. NW allowing for service work to be completed. Restoration will follow the underground installation crew and closures will be removed as each block is complete.

Find below a July 30, 2021 update on the Xcel Energy gas main and service replacement project taking place in the downtown Faribault.

  • Xcel will be gassing up the newly installed 8-inch main along 2nd St. NW & 3rd St. NW on Friday July, 30th. The public may smell gas in the vicinity of the construction area during the purging process.
  • Next week, Aug. 2, work will begin in the alley between Central Ave and Hwy. 60, as well as installing services off of the new main along 2nd St. NW

Find below a July 22, 2021 update on the Xcel Energy gas main and service replacement project taking place in the downtown Faribault.

The gas crews on site have almost completed the main installation for streets including 2nd St. NW, 2nd Ave NW and 3rd St. NW. There will still be closures on these streets but it will be smaller sections/intersections at a time going forward. It is anticipated that the services off of the newly installed main will be finished in the next 3-4 weeks.  After this is complete, work will begin in the alleys downtown. Communication with business will be consistent and best efforts will be made to accommodate  delivery schedules, garbage pick ups, and maintaining access for parking etc. See below for traffic plan updates.

Traffic 

  • The lane shift on 2nd St. near the Fire Station will remain active until later in the week of 7/26.
  • The intersection of 2nd AVE NW and 3rd St. NW will be closed Thursday (7/22) or Friday (7/23) for installation of new gas main, and closed one day the week of 7/26 for restoration to take place.
  • The one ways in the downtown area will be removed on Wednesday 7/21 once restoration is complete and will be set back up when work begins on services.
  • The zero block of 2nd St. NE will have a closure restricting access from HWY 60 but will maintain access from Central AVE and more parking will be reopened to the businesses associated with that block.
  • The intersection of 2nd Ave NW and 3rd St. NW will be closed once the one ways are removed on 3rd St. NW and will be closed until gas up of the new lines is complete.
