City Hall to launch phone tree Jan. 18

After years of attempting to manually transfer customers with the information given by the caller, City Hall will implement a phone tree this month that allows customers to pick their desired department through various prompts.

When customers call City Hall (507-334-2222) after Jan. 17, they’ll be met with an automated set of options, ranging from Utility Billing to Public Works to Parks and Recreation, and everything in between. A single click of the button will then send them to a City employee who’s more versed in answering specific questions regarding the reason for the call. If there are no options that fit the reason for the call, pressing 0 will connect them with a general receptionist. 

The intent of the automation is to get customers to where they want to be more quickly, while also connecting them with an employee more familiar with the topic that led to the call. In the past, a receptionist was tasked with attempting to send a customer to the correct person, which often times resulted in the customer having to talk to multiple people.
